8:00 am Early Morning Bird Walk Dr. Shalaway and local birders invite you to explore two favorite local sites – Starting at Panorama Overlook looking west up the Potomac and then moving (by car) down the mountain, parking along the Great Cacapon River and walking to the area where it flows into the Potomac.
10:00 am Beginning Birding For All Ages at Cacapon State Park. Naturalists Kelly Smith and Ellen Murphy along with naturalist from PVAS introduce birding fundamentals to launch children and adults on a lifetime adventure. Learn bird identification by sight, song, habitat and field guide, how to use binoculars, do’s and don’ts while on a walk, starting & keeping a life list.
1:00 pm The Joys of Backyard Birding begins at the Garden Room of The Country Inn. Anyone interested in “Bird Watching at Home” is invited to join Judy Webb’s discussion of ways to attract birds you want to see and ways to deter squirrels, raccoons and bear from raiding feeders. Betty Harmison invites us to tour her “in town” backyard habitat – just a short walk from The Country Inn.
2:30 pm Exploration at Eidolon Hike the trails of Morgan County’s local Nature Conservancy preserve maintained by the Potomac Valley Audubon Society. Joe Gentile and Dr. Shalaway will help you explore the wildlife and natural features as well as the human history of this fascinating 354-acre site on Sideling Mountain. Anyone interested in Geo Cashing or a possible bear sighting should be sure to go on this adventure.
*7:00 pm Behind The Scenes Investigations Marcy Heacker, Forensic Ornithologist at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History will share her behind the scenes investigations into the mysteries of aviation bird strikes (remember the Hudson River plan crash) and the searches for possible elusive survivors of extinct species – notably the Ivory Billed Woodpecker.
*Dessert and Coffee
*8:15 pm The Enchanted Island Dr. Scott Shalaway, will share his experiences and pictures of leading a group of birders in the Galapagos Island.
